But the truth is, when we set boundaries we give ourselves back the power of self-respect. Same here… You’re not alone. Many of us struggle with setting boundaries in our relationships, fearing that we’ll be perceived as selfish or uncaring. But sometimes we forget to remind ourselves; setting boundaries isn’t about being selfish, it’s about respecting yourself and your limits.

Why Boundaries Matter:

Boundaries are the protective barriers fostering a space where our needs and values are respected. They help protect your physical, emotional, and mental well-being, ensuring that your needs are met, your feelings are considered, and emotions are respected. A lack of boundaries can leave you vulnerable to situations where others may exploit and take advantage of you.

Example: Let’s say you have a friend who always calls you at the last minute to vent about her problems, leaving you feeling emotionally drained. And although you care a whole lot for this friend, it’s 8-9pm at night, you managed to get all the chores done for the day and have just enough time left before bed for “me-time”. Instead of dropping everything to accommodate her, you could kindly but firmly let her know that you’re unavailable at the moment and suggest scheduling a time to talk when you’re both free. With kind intentions and an understanding tone, it’s ok to say “no” for your own energy and overall well-being.

How Self-compassion and Setting Boundaries correlate:

Self-compassion plays a crucial role in establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries. It’s about choosing yourself, being selective with your energy, choosing your daily goals to focus on that matter to you without having to feel guilty or selfish.

One of the most significant expressions (in my opinion) regarding this topic is: “You cannot pour from an empty cup”. To extend love and kindness to another, one must first love and be kind to oneself. Just as you would offer warmth and compassion to a friend in need, it’s essential to extend the same level of care to yourself.

Challenge Your Inner Critic:

Are you plagued by doubts or fears of being perceived as selfish or unkind? Challenge these negative thoughts by reframing them with compassion and self-acceptance. Remind yourself that setting boundaries is an act of self-care, not selfishness, and that you deserve to prioritize your well-being in relationships.

Set boundaries with kindness:

When establishing boundaries, do so with kindness and clarity. Speak out and verbalize your limits assertively, but do so without blame or judgment. Approach the situation with empathy for yourself and the other person involved, recognizing that setting boundaries is an essential aspect of healthy relationships. Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your own needs and advocate for yourself in a respectful and compassionate manner.

By setting boundaries and practicing self-compassion in our relationships, we reclaim our power and prioritize our own well-being. Remember, it’s not selfish to prioritize yourself—it’s necessary for maintaining your mental and emotional health. So there you have it ladies. I encourage you to set those boundaries, so that you may form fulfilling relationships built on mutual respect and understanding.

Take a moment to reflect on your own boundaries and self-compassion practices.
